The pubs were the liberal party until about 1900 and then the dems became the liberal party and stayed that way up to now. TR was a liberal/progressive. Father of modern progressive party.

So looking at parties is not how to judge philosophies, one has to look at liberal versus conservative.

The abolitionist's were a combination of church groups like quakers, liberals and other people of conscience.

Abe Lincoln was a liberal Republican.
