December 5, 1997: Subsidiary Receives $9.9 Million Contract Amendment - For RADARSAT Operations

SED Systems Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Calian Technology Ltd., has been awarded a $9.9 million amendment to its RADARSAT operations contract.

Under the terms of the contract with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), SED's team of 40 engineers and technicians provide operations support for RADARSAT, Canada's first remote sensing satellite, planning spacecraft and payload operations, sending commands to the satellite, monitoring its performance, and maintaining its orbit some 800 km above the earth's surface. SED's team is located at CSA headquarters in Saint-Hubert, Quebec and at a second tracking station adjacent to SED's facility in Saskatoon.

The amendment announced extends the RADARSAT contract period until August 2001, and raises the contract value to just over $30 million. The extension of nearly one year anticipates a longer operational satellite life than originally planned, due to the precision of the launch which saved precious on-board fuel, and to the satellite's excellent performance on orbit to date. All major systems continue to operate as expected more than two years after its launch on November 4, 1995.

RADARSAT provides images of the earth's land and ocean regions using radar technology, allowing the satellite to "see" the earth, day and night, and in all weather conditions. Owned and operated by the CSA, RADARSAT was designed and built in Canada by a team of 30 companies from across the country. SED's role included the development of electrical equipment to test spaceflight hardware prior to its launch, and ground-based systems to monitor and control the spacecraft and its payload while in orbit. SED was awarded the contract to provide operations support in June 1993. In total, SED has received more than $45 million in RADARSAT-related contracts from the CSA.

SED Systems is a supplier of satellite ground systems that include In-orbit Test, Satellite Spectrum Monitoring, and Telemetry, Tracking and Command Systems, and Satellite Control Facilities. Customer support includes development of satellite test procedures, on-site satellite test and commissioning, and long-term satellite operations. SED's customers include the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, Inmarsat, Intelsat, and major satellite manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin, Hughes Space and Communications, and Space Systems Loral.

Calian Technology sells technology services to industry and government worldwide.
