Martin's guilt or innocence wasn't at issue, Zimmerman's was. It didn't matter whether Martin was a thug or a priest - he's dead, and beyond human reach or judgement. Only Zimmerman was being judged by that jury. Murder trials don't depend on the guilt or innocence of the victims. Ask OJ about it.
