One cannot even begin to imagine the splendor that was Athena's statue in the temple of the city that bore her name. If that were an idol you should be thanking god for the thought, skill that went into its construction that led onto to further skills (& all later architecture)

What did you find following but more centuries of inconography & saintly idols. But for the control of thought & demanding obediance, yes, its part of the evolutionary aspect of religion to sever ties to older forms & unite under the new regimes , new idols. Few in the world today, except some moron fundys in Islam are not in love with the classic statues of the human form or depiction of the graceful animal either for that matter.
