Bosco & all,
got some by-news from my last project (re: Server & Database performance). The news is: with Intel cranking up SMPsolutions (and others doing the same on x86-NUMA at the even higher end -> Sequent for instance) even faster now that they purchased Corollary (expect 400Mhz SMP solution scalable to 8 CPUs on their upcoming SLOT-2 design as soon as April/MAy) this means ALARM BELL is on for many of those DATABASE-Centred workstation products that allow themselves the luxury of using their RISC design. In danger are IMO: IBM (PowerPC), SUN (UltraSPARC), & HP (PA-RISC) because their designs will have a hard time to go head on head with Deschutes at 400Mhz with 1MB cache.

Now that I2O and similiar server based performance enhancements are getting available, only Digital Alpha seems to be able to up the ante in terms of performance with their chip-design.

Ths means: beware of companies that rely on RISC based designs as a nice cash-cow: IBM, SUN, HP. DEC is better placed because their strong ties with Microsoft. But the PowerPC & Sparc seem to be loosing their performance edge to x86. WOW. This truly got strategic consequences for me. It means: AVOID those workstation companies.

Another company that shouldn't be affected too much because their turf is not yet conquered by the WINTEL rollercoaster: SGI. They are having their problems, sure, but the highend graphics world is a territorry that needs to be conquered by BillGates first..

OTOH, those cc-NUMA based designs could be super-hot, particulary if they rely on Intel architecture. This means, SQNT should get a strong boost from this FA-perspective (strategically I mean).

best wishes
CROSSY
