If you don't want to spend any money on an insulated bottle here is what we did back in the days before polar came out with insulated bottles...

1. Fill up your water bottle approx 2/3 with water and place it in the freezer at noon the day before you ride. Leave the top off.

2. The morning of the ride take the bottle out of the freezer and top it off with cold water. Find a decent sized white sock and place the bottle in the sock. Put the bottle/sock into your cage. This worked for us in the southwest for the longest time.

3. When you have approx 5-10% left in your ride take the bottle out of the sock and place it back into the cage. Take the nice coolish sock and place it around the back of your neck.

BTW, I don't like the new fangled insulated bottles that have the open/close gizmo on the cap. I can never remember if the dang thing was open or closed!
