Michael - Re: "... could Intel branch out and impact Altera or Xilinx's markets in the future? "

Highly unlikely.

Altera put Intel into the CPLD business about 12 years ago when Intel agreed to serve as a foundry for Altera's early CMOS EPROM PLD's. Intel took a license to second source these devices.

Working both together and independently, Altera grew quickly from 0 to about $600,000,000 this year (Est.). Intel, on the other hand, only grew their PLD business to about $50,000,000 as of 1994 when they decided to sell their complete PLD device, inventory and customer list to Altera, therby exiting the PLD business.

This business - programmable logic - require 110% attention and focus in order to survive and grow. AMD is learning this as their Vantis division continues to lose market share to ALtera, Xilinx and Lattice.
