I am surprised that the revelation about widespread gathering of personal information was such a shock. An assumption that this is taking place is already part of the popular culture. Just check, for example, any episode of NCIS - and you'll see those lovely agents find all kinds of info - on anyone - within seconds.

Could be that Snowden is in possession of some really important defense info which he hasn't revealed. His lawyers seemed to imply it. In this case, the very possibility of a potential disclosure may in itself be "grave damage".

Dunno.
