Like the Salem witch trials if you look further than skin deep it was all about stealing money and property.

It's been a long time since I read The Crucible, but I remember that there was one "witch" who refused to confess because his (sorry, don't remember the gender, but think it was a male) estate would automatically be forfeit if there was a confession. So instead of the relatively humane hanging, he was pressed to death with rocks. Each time they would ask for a confession, he would say "no, I'm not a witch" and then they would add another stone.

Zimmerman appears to be having the same fate. His "press" is a combination of "the" press and potentially the civil legal system.
