"Southern Strategy Democrats?" The Democrats did employ a southern strategy for a long time. Knowing that the leadership was too extreme liberal to win mass appeal - see the McGovern campaign - Dems recruited covert liberals from the south as their national champions - Carter, Gore, Clinton. Obama was the first northern liberal to win the Presidency as a Democrat since Kennedy.

Humphrey, McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry - all northern liberal losers.

The strategy stopped working though with Gore ... he couldn't carry his home state - but it gave them 12 years of Democrats in the WH.
