Its not just about the money. If was just about money, then the solution would be a lot simpler. There is psychological damage that results from all the years of slavery and discrimination. Just like alcoholics pass down their dysfunction to their offspring, so does generation after generation of former black slaves pass down their dysfunction.

There are plenty of black middle class kids being raised in the suburbs of DC (whose parents both have govt jobs) who don't appear to be damaged psychologically by racial history. They are going to good colleges and feel secure because they have been raised in an economic secure environment and see the possibility of success for themselves.

Whites forever point to the exceptions in an effort to show that its not the system's fault but the individuals. Its like the horatio alger myth............anyone can be rich in America if they really, really try. These myths hurt us; not help us.

Yes, there are successful blacks but their success rate is much less than whites. And there are sound reasons for that the variance between the races in the rate.

I do agree that poor ethnic minorities may feel discriminated against, but I see that as a function of their poverty more than their racial history.

To deny that there is racial/ethnic discrimination in this country does not help us. Juror 37 all but proved that point.

To interrupt the dysfunction and stop the cycle of poverty, you need to get them when they are young and provide them with reasonable alternatives.

Agree, And for me a reasonable alternative would be to encourage policies that encourage people to get marketable skills before they get married or have children--in other words no welfare going forward.

And how do you do that?

There are a lot of unmarried white women with children......there is not the level of dysfunction and poverty among these women like there is in the black community.

Disagree, I've been in white housing projects in rural mountain Georgia. Dysfunction is the result of the poverty IMHO. For those white women on welfare.

Here in Seattle there are a lot of unmarried women with children.....there is little dysfunction.
