>> Strategy Analytics: Global Mobile Phone Shipments Reach 386 Million Units in Q2 2013

Strategy Analytics Press Release
Boston
July 25, 2013

marketwatch.com

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments rose 4 percent annually to reach 386 million units in Q2 2013. Samsung strengthened its leading position with a healthy 28 percent share of all mobile phones shipped worldwide.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global mobile phone shipments reached 386.0 million units in Q2 2013, rising 4 percent from 371.5 million in Q2 2012. This was the mobile phone industry's fastest growth rate since the second quarter of 2012. Strong demand for entry-level Android devices in Asia and Latin America drove much of the growth. Samsung continued to dominate, shipping 107.0 million mobile phones worldwide and capturing a solid 28 percent marketshare to solidify its first-place lead."

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Nokia's global mobile phone shipments fell 27 percent from 83.7 million units in Q2 2012 to 61.1 million in Q2 2013. Fading Symbian smartphone volumes and lackluster feature phone demand caused Nokia's shrinkage. Nokia continued to struggle in the big three markets of China, US and India and these remain key challenges that the Finnish vendor needs to fix as a matter of priority."

Woody Oh, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, "Apple grew 20 percent annually and shipped 31.2 million iPhones worldwide in Q2 2013. Apple's global mobile phone marketshare inched up slightly to 8 percent, from 7 percent a year earlier. Apple's share of the mobile phone market is struggling to break through the 10 percent ceiling into double figures, and it will only be able to achieve this on a sustainable basis if it adds new iPhone models at lower price-points or with bigger screens in the future."

Other findings from the research include:

• LG held fourth position with 5 percent share of the global mobile phone market. LG has been ramping up its mass-market F and L series, on top of popular models from the Optimus range, and this helped LG to grow at an above-average rate of 36 percent annually in the quarter. LG is now the fastest growing brand among the top five players;

• ZTE captured 5 percent share of the global mobile phone market in Q2 2013, as the company's performance stabilized after a weak first quarter of the year. ZTE grew smartphone volumes strongly in the huge China market and it is challenging LG for fourth position globally as a result.

>> Strategy Analytics: Samsung Becomes World's Most Profitable Handset Vendor in Q2 2013

Strategy Analytics Press Relrase
Boston, MA
July 26, 2013

reuters.com

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Samsung became the world's most profitable handset vendor in Q2 2013. Apple slipped into second position, as margins have been hit by lackluster iPhone 5 volumes and tougher competition in China.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "We estimate Samsung's operating profit for its handset division stood at US$5.2 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Samsung overtook Apple for the first time, which recorded an estimated iPhone operating profit of US$4.6 billion. With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, Samsung has finally succeeded in becoming the handset industry's largest and most profitable vendor."

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Apple's reign as the world's most profitable handset vendor lasted almost four years, from Q3 2009 to Q1 2013. Apple's profit margin for its handset division has been fading recently due to lackluster iPhone 5 volumes and tougher competition from rivals. Samsung is performing well in the US market, while Huawei, ZTE and other local brands are growing vigorously in China. Apple is now under intense pressure to launch more iPhone models at cheaper price-points or with larger screens to fend off the surging competition and recapture lost profits in the second half of 2013."

>> Apple hits three-year low in smartphone marketshare, shipment figures reveal

Fresh reports on the state of the cellphone market during Q2 2013 have blown through the barn door, and industry analysts are flaunting some fairly impressive figures. Smartphones have outsold their less-intelligent brethren for the second quarter in a row, and Strategy Analytics says shipments hit a record-breaking 237.9 million. According to IDC, Samsung managed to ship a total of 72.4 million smartphones during Q2 -- a 43.9% boost year-over-year -- with help of the Galaxy S 4 and price cuts to the GS3. To put that in perspective, that's more than double the 31.2 million iPhones Apple managed to ship, and Strategy Analytics claims this marks a three-year low in Cook and Co.'s marketshare. While LG and ZTE each occupy third and fifth place, respectively, Lenovo pushed Huawei out of the number four slot by sending out 11.3 million handsets.
