Amazing. I wonder what the context of that quote was? For example, I would be all for prosecution of a journalist if he stole your diary and published embarrassing and harmful things about you. But if the journalist did an expose on government violations of our Constitutional rights, then isn't that precisely why our Constitution guarantees freedom of the press? To help us safeguard our Constitutional rights by constraining government and holding them accountable for abuses? So context matters here. Was Jefferson talking about the former or the latter?
