You probably have learned all this by now, but just in case: Brown wasps have a different venom makeup than yellow jackets, hornets, or red wasps, all of which hurt like hell and usually only cause swelling at the site. Having been stung by innumerable bees as a kid, I got so I barely felt them... just got the stinger out as quickly as possible. The bee dies once they've stung something since the barbed stinger and attached venom sack stay in pumping away and tear away from the bee, but not wasps since their stingers don't have barbs like bees.

The reaction is called anaphylactic shock. It's caused by a severe allergic reaction to certain things... wasp/bee stings being probably the most common. Treatment is exactly what Robert received... benadryl & cortisone. Asthmatics have the same reaction when they have an asthma attack. Given that Robert's had this happen, you might consider getting a prescription for an EPIpen which contains epinephrine. It's a self injecting device that you simply hit your thigh with at the first sign of distress. Laura carries one because of her asthma... fortunately she's never had to use it.

As for ticks, that sounds like Lyme disease. That's usually a much slower process though so your friend must have had a very severe allergic reaction that was triggered. I'm sorry you lost a good friend like that.

Something like Deep Woods Off will keep ticks and most wasp breeds away... mostly.

Solution: keep him out of fields and make him take up crocheting. Glad he's OK.
