Sal,

It being a laptop limits your options. Sounds like you have a screen res problem, a driver/linux problem, and possibly, a problem with your modem access being too slow for graphical X to be practical.

Could you describe the machine further:

1. screen res/max pixel depth/external monitor?
2. memory?
3. ethernet plug?
4. speed?
5. disk available
6. CD?

If you used x-client text only apps, you could use one of the x-client applications and not have to install unix on the laptop. Then you can just log in. After all, we once used text-unix over 9600 baud lines.

But the items listed above could change the recommendation.
