I don't know about that; I've never heard it. But if he said it, he was in the final throes of senility, because he fought unions nearly to his dying day; even after Edsel cut a deal with them in the early 40s, Henry wouldn't sign off on it for a very long time.

I do not think there is ANY chance that Ford believed unions were good at any point. He may have said it was good Ford finally caved, because the employees were essentially walking out -- with GM and Chrysler having already gone union, he had little alternative.

He recognized the corruption in the union business and wanted nothing to do with it.
