Ok, the likelihood of all client devices going to SSD is virtually nil – economically it doesn’t make sense (SSD is 10x cost of HDD) and there isn’t enough supply of SSD for this to happen anyway. Not all data stored requires the rapid access/higher performance that SSD offers – this is a common misconception regarding data storage. HDD is more than adequate as a medium to store the bulk of data out there. And with the exponential growth of digital content likely to continue (50x current level over next 10 years according to IDC), HDD will continue to be used for majority of data storage needs. Consequently, nobody is going to stop buying HDDs – I just can’t see that happening.

I take your point that it will not be like-for-like replacement strictly speaking on cloud storage replacing PC hard drives, but given the 30%+ CAGR projected for storage demand out to 2020, it will effectively be like-for-like, even with de-duplication and virtualisation methods used to make storage more efficient. That would be my understanding anyway, open to correction if I am wrong in any aspect of my analysis here.

Thanks for your response by the way, its an interesting discussion.
