To me it is about right that near 80% seem to struggle living paycheck to paycheck these days down here.. Of course this includes people with incomes, often unstable, far above the poverty line that struggle with keeping a budget. I believe another big reason the economy can't take off is so many have poor credit these days thus purchasing power is no where near what it was in the 80's., 90's and 00's for a lot of people?

I think another key component is psychological. Even here where unemployment is at 4.5% you don't seen people painting their houses or putting on additions like in years past. In my area in the last two years, I have seen a couple of roofs replaced.......a necessity in a rainy climate........that's about it.

I think the great recession and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have broken the American spirit......at least temporarily. We are not as invincible as we thought........and frankly, I don't think we are prepared enough for a very different future. The world has changed dramatically over the last 100 years and too many Americans have remained insulated from those changes IMO.
