Hi Tenchusatsu; Re bentway's belief that: "Any engineered project, whether a bridge or a microprocessor, has a design life always less than 500 years."

I had a leftie tell me that dams are not a renewable source of energy because their reservoirs eventually get filled up with silt. What a nimrod. It's like the guy thinks that the engineers in the future are too stupid to fix it. One of the engineers I know had a youth job pumping out the silt behind an electricity producing dam on the east coast back in the 1980s. The dam was built before the civil war. I don't know if this was the first time it had to be de-silted.

Apparently some of the Roman engineering projects lasted a lot more than 500 years but that wasn't by design. Just lucky, most of their stuff is long gone.

The reason we don't design for 500 years now is that we've got extremely good evidence that better designs will replace it before then. The whole idea of planning out the future for 1000 years reminds me of another set of modern religion replacement type idiots, the Nazis. Same thing applies to their attempts to legislate permanent changes to society. Our laws won't restrict the people of 200 years from now any more than the laws put down by the founding fathers are restricting Obama's folks now. This applies to their protection of the environment just as much as it does to gun rights. Laws are something that has to be hashed out every generation.
