I bought this stock at 26 in April and sold it for 41.5 in July. (I also lost some $ buying puts immediately after hearing the bad news at the analysts conference call in July (which neither the company nor the analysts were very interested in sharing with the wider shareholding public...thus it took three more months to tank) I do however follow the semi market quite closely and would like to share a few thoughts here. The company has always been vague about the shareholder lawsuit ...but it is worth noting the courts have allowed it to go foreward despite the more difficult recent SEC rules governing these cases. Second, there is a more fundemental problem than the vagaries or the ups and downs of the mobile phone market....or the notoriously unspecific if not inaccurate references to the companies "strategic relationships" with Qualcomm and Erriccson. The real problem lies with recent developments in semiconductor technology itself. While the IBM developments in copper wire technology promises to speed up semi speed without materially affecting price (one of GaAs's big limitations), the IBM technology does not directly affect issues relating to the MEDIUM through which the wires pass (ie GaAs or Silicon). On December 10, however, Texas Instruments is going to announce the results of, and plans for the development of a material called xerogel, a material used in the MEDIUM through which the semi wires pass. This will be announced at the IDEM ( the prestigous conference of semiconductor engineers) in Washington. The development of this material directly affects such companies as Anadigics and Triquint whose primary speciality and strong suitis making speciality chips distinguished by their GaAs medium. Texas Instruments, in preliminary announcements has estimated that this will increase chip speed by a factor of 10x (as opposed to the 5x claimed for GaAs.) This could possibly threaten the very existence and economic viability of the GaAs manufacturers. And I suspect that the drops in BOTH Anadigic and TQNT are caused by selling in advance of the widespread dissemination of this information. At any rate, beware...as the officers of Triquint cannot be relied upon to inform you.
