Damned shame that nasty horseshit still circulates. A recent History Channel series properly called them "the men who built America".

There were exceptions, where lowlife scoundrels collaborated with their counterparts in government and skinned the populace, i.e., the UPRR.

The "Myth of the Robber Barons" was a good exploration of the subject. Actually reading it would destroy childish and comfortable illusions.
