Summation From Semiconductor Business News - Dec 5,1997

The pertinent excerpt:

CEM stocks take a hit

Taking one of the biggest shots on Wall Street recently was the
electronic manufacturing services (EMS) industry. From Oct. 1 to
Thanksgiving, as the Dow fell 3% and the Nasdaq 6%, EMS stocks
fell a whopping 18%, says BT Alex Brown's Jim Savage. This fall
"is unjustified by fundamentals," he claims in EBN.

U.S.-based contract electronics manufacturers with big factories in
Malaysia and Thailand (Jabil Circuits, SCI Systems, and Solectron)
should experience a "moderate net benefit" from weakening local
currency, he says. These firms "should see lower manufacturing
costs as a result of currency devaluations." They could also gain
market share from local CEMs since they're paid in U.S. dollars.
