Number of hybrid vehicles in California triples in five years

With gas prices hovering near $4 a gallon for the past several years, the appetite for hybrid vehicles in California has grown.

About 585,000 hybrid vehicles were registered in the state on the first day of 2013, according to the latest figures from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. That's up from 218,000 hybrid vehicles registered on the first day of 2008.

Put another way, the total number of hybrid vehicles in California grew by 370,000; the total number of all registered vehicles regardless of type grew by 670,000.

About one of every 50 registered vehicles in California is a hybrid.

Hybrid vehicles tend to have better fuel economy than their traditional counterparts. They also tend to have better resale value.

Hybrid drawbacks often include higher upfront and maintenance costs and lower power output.

A few years ago, hybrid vehicle options were limited to a few cars like the Toyota Prius. Today, it's possible to buy everything from a Chevrolet Silverado truck hybrid (21 combined mpg) or a Porsche Panamera hybrid (25 combined mpg).

This chart shows the total number of hybrid vehicles registered in California since 2008.
