Inode, Many, if not most, Education majors are people who really couldn't handle a real major in college. I know you're responding to the Tedster, but can you elaborate on this statement?
Education is a real major. Not as sexy as pre-med, pre-law, business, or even engineering these days, but it's still something that a lot of people go into.
And AFAIK, they don't do it because they couldn't handle anything else. They do it because they really want to be teachers, because they have a passion for teaching future generations of young adults.
Of course, I'm not saying that they should or shouldn't be paid more. On the surface, yeah they should be paid more for their troubles, but (a) we don't seem to have a shortage of teachers, and (b) throwing more money just masks the real problems with public education in America these days.
