SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--
New platform combines integrated security and advanced WAN
capabilities for next-generation networks
Global data networking leader 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) today announced the SuperStack II NETBuilder SI (Secure Internet/Intranet) router, a new platform delivering secure remote office connectivity with a seamless migration path to next-generation Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
The SuperStack II NETBuilder SI router is equipped with dual 10/100 Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) ports and flexible Wide Area Network (WAN) ports for high performance network connectivity. It also supports NETBuilder software with integrated support for Network Address Translation (NAT) and a flexible, easy-to-use NCSA-certified firewall, for an integrated system solution designed to meet the needs of today's security conscious data networks.
"3Com's SuperStack II NETBuilder SI router was the platform of choice for National Data Corporation's most recent WAN expansion because of the flexibility of LANs and WANs which it supports," said Greg Guldenschuh, manager of Distributed Systems Networking at National Data Corp. "Our mission critical corporate network spreads around the globe and supports more than 3,000 nodes encompassing many different technologies. This solution was simple to install, and can meet our performance, security and availability requirements for LAN and WAN connectivity."
Security Of Enterprise Resources Key For Network Administrators
Security is one of the major concerns for today's system administrators who need to provide users with information-sharing capabilities across enterprise networks and Internet access, while maintaining the integrity of their corporate data. The SuperStack II
NETBuilder SI platform provides complete protection from outside intrusion with two auto-sensing 10/100 BASE-T ports that physically segment two LANs from each other as well as an easy-to-use NSCA-certified embedded IP Firewall. This combination of logical and physical security provides secure access for locations which require multiple levels of user security.
Advanced Security Features Highlight Platform
The new SuperStack II NETBuilder SI router includes the industry's most advanced security features including an integrated IP firewall, application-specific routing and support for Network Address Translation (NAT). 3Com's firewall implementation makes security features easy to configure and maintain, offering network managers a selection of easy to use, application specific commands to allow or deny such activities as Internet browsing traffic, FTP, Telnet and e-mail on each individual network port.
3Com's firewall also provides application specific routing and attack logging/audit trail features which extend the capability of the SuperStack II NETBuilder SI platform beyond competitive packet filtering routers which are not application aware. 3Com's innovative application specific routing allows the NETBuilder firewall to complement existing standalone firewalls by acting as a front-end packet screening filter, providing the most secure networking infrastructure.
An additional security feature, NAT, takes a private IP addressing scheme on the customer's internal network and converts it to a public addressing scheme. With this feature, users can keep their current IP addresses when they first connect to the Internet or when they change Internet Service Providers (ISPs). NAT allows enterprises with private IP networks to reuse addresses internally and it optimizes address space as only one public IP address per remote site is required. NAT enhances firewall security protection because IP addresses in the internal network are hidden from outside connections, preventing hackers from accessing an inside host.
"As users migrate to IP-based public infrastructures and Virtual Private Networks the challenge will be to ensure the privacy and integrity of corporate data being transported across the public IP backbone," said Chandy Nilakantan, 3Com vice president and general manager. "3Com, in building next-generation network products like the SuperStack II NETBuilder SI, kept these concerns in mind and will protect our customer's investment through simple software upgrades. The first of these software releases will provide IPSec standards-based encryption and VPN tunnel management features needed for secure, scaleable integrated IP-based solutions."
