You can find affordable housing in good areas if you live outside of our main gateway coastal cities. I know it is a long haul trying to find it in Boston or LA to commute to the jobs. Obama can't blame sky high housing prices there on Congress<g>

Now what I would do personally if in LA was commute and be a big property owner in the inland empire or live well north and work the central Valley. I drive way more than that instate FL but of course it is once a week plus I avoid the rush hour traffic.

I really think the future is Denver, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, Tampa where they have a better balance between jobs, opportunities coupled with lower cost of living and a good stock of affordable housing. I just know all this paying 6-7-8-10 times your household income just to get into any home in your market never ends well.
