I'm not sure the combination of a reasonable acceptance from the population and someone the US strongly controlled could have been achieved.

Why would that have happened?

When we went into Japan we wrote their constitution and STAYED there to see it was put into effect.

We also crushed Japan before all of this happened. That and you have the fact that there is less sectarian strife and violent religious fundamentalism in Japan.
