Bob, It just takes time to learn the terminology. You are right, short term and long term do refer to how long you plan to hold a stock. Long term just means that you are planning on holding the stock for a while. Short term means you do not plan to hold the stock for too long of a time period. When you are short in a stock, it means that you are hoping that the stock price will go down. It is a completely different process from buying a stock. It has nothing to do with whether you are at a profit or a loss on a stock. Here is a good site for obtaining some information. They have a glossary for stock terms, along with other information.
