Yes, issued by US banks, except for my Italian VISA. Chase VISA isn't very happy about having my account, though, especially since I hardly ever use it.

Car rental without is, as you note, practically impossible. Checking into hotels can be a problem, too. They're essential when travelling, which is when I use them the most, as plastic isn't all taht big in Italy even now. Except, of course, for ATM cards, without which no one could manage.
