Any comments on this announcement? I'm not an
expert in the area of FPD's, though I have a small stake in
Photon Dynamics (PHTN).

BTW, $1 ~ Y109, so the cost of the 42" TV is
about $11,000 :-)

Have fun

( BW)(NEC-USA) Industry's First 42-inch Wide Color Plasma Display TV
is Introduced by NEC Corporation and NEC Home Electronics, Ltd.

Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 1996--NEC Corporation
(NEC) and NEC Home Electronics, Ltd. (NECHE), announced today the
completion of a 42-inch color plasma display, and plans to sell the
industry's first 42-inch wide color plasma display television in
Japan. The television is expected to retail for below 1.2 million
yen, and shipping will begin in February 1997. Current sales
projections are to sell 10,000 units in the first year.
Leveraging the thin and lightweight features of the color plasma
display panel (PDP), has made possible a wall mount type large screen
TV which can display, at the same time, information from different
sources such as conventional TV and satellite broadcasting, digital
broadcasting including both pictures and data, and data from personal
computers. NEC and NECHE will promote the color plasma display
television as a core information tool for the 21st century.
From December 1996, NEC will begin selling 42- inch color PDP
monitors at a sample price of 1 million yen. Unit sales for the
monitors will target TV manufacturers both in and outside of Japan.
As a result of combined technologies including cell structure for
high brightness and driving method for low power consumption, NEC has
completed a 24-inch color PDP as a commercial product after the
33-inch model. NEC also named all color PDPs "COSMOPLASMA", and is
developing future PDPs including a high definition television model.
The market size for TVs and monitors using color PDP is projected to
reach 520 billion yen by the year 2000, and 1.5 trillion yen by the
year 2002. The NEC group expects its total sales for both products
and modules to hit approximately 150 million yen by the year 2000,
and 500 billion yen by 2002.
