And here I always thought the turning point was Eisenhower and the build out of our national highway system?


I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not but there has been an anti urban agenda in this country since Jefferson who professed great love for the rural life in VA. And it goes on today........ever listen to one of Palin's speeches?

Part of the problem, American cities, unlike European ones, had their major development occur during the industrial age.........meaning lots of smoke and noise from factories. Cities were unpleasant places to live.........there are photos of Pittsburgh at noon where the street lights are on because its so dark from factory smoke.

However, much of that has changed since WW II and factories have migrated to the suburbs. Now those old factory bldgs are lofts.
