I made a comment before about the benefits of having the gyro and the accelerometer with the same axis alignment. However, the solution below looks like a half-witted marketing idea. This product did prompt a thought, though. We should look for specifications on future MEMS devices which indicate the angular alignment accuracy (or misalignment) between the gyros, accelerometers and magnetometers. The two sensor axes in the horizontal plane should be much more accurate than the vertical plane -- for 3-axes sensors. I conjecture that the testing of this will not be easy, so we may not see much info for the next couple of years, but we should watch to see which companies boast first.<g>

X-ray analysis shows that the LSM330DLC simply contains separate co-packaged accelerometer and gyroscope dies. The accelerometer is connected to an ASIC with V656A 2010 die markings, while the gyroscope ASIC has V701 2010 die markings. The two devices are mounted side-by-side in the package, with each ASIC die stacked over the corresponding MEMS cap and die. This will still bring some advantages to the mobile device system integrators, but it hardly counts as an integrated MEMS device.
