The fact is liberals and progressives were usually pretty racist until the 1960's
If you define racism as treating people different based solely on race, liberals are still racist. The reason liberals support programs to help minorities is because they believe minorities to be inferior and only capable of success with govt help. Hence the need for affirmative action and other race based liberal policies.

Conservatives believe all people are equal and should be treated equally. Saying that in America today gets you labeled as a racist.
