The first five months of this year were the driest on record in California, with reservoirs in the state at 20 percent below normal levels. The lawn rebate program here will save approximately 47 million gallons of water each year, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

You just hit on one of the reasons why I left S. CA. The water situation in the SW is precarious at best. The CO river has turned into a trickle. And LA has had normal or above normal rainfall for only 4 of the last ten years.

We're talking average normal rainfall of less than 15" per year...........not nearly enough to sustain a lawn without irrigation.
