Those sorts of examples are much different that standard medical policies. Most (all??) the horror tales I've heard about denied medical claims have much more obvious issues, usually people are trying "cures" which are clearly excluded by their policy.

In looking at my parents in their older age, I don't recall ever a single case of insurance hassle, and they were great believers in insurance (both being Accountants by profession) so even in retirement they carried two levels of insurance past Medicare. Nuts in my opinion, but Accountants can't stand the unexpected. The monthly budget must be exact, and contingencies must be converted to regular monthly bills. Even if it doubles the cost.
