My husband and I both have insurance, and we have had numerous hassles with insurers- about coverage, about the two policies, about everything. When I had a serious illness it was unbelievable how many hassles there were. And the insurers want to be doctors- so even though you have a very good reason going with a specific medication, they will try to change it- again, and again and again. Your parents were very lucky (or healthy) if they didn't have problems. I don't know anyone who has not had problems, at some point, with their insurer.
