Do the problems not have any basis in the fine print of your policies? One of the things I do hear about is people failing to pay attention to the preferred provider network, or the prescription fine print, things like that. Then they feel abused when they get stuck with extra costs.

I'm in my early 50's but its been 6 years since my own last visit to a Dr (I picked up african tick fever on a trip) and that was < $200 for several office visits to figure it out + the medication. Meanwhile I've paid over 23K in premiums since that time, for nothing, other than protection, and in theory, its "invested" by the insurer to pay for me when I do get sick. But over my life so far, I've likely paid >75K in premiums and cost < 1K from the insurers so far. I did have risk protection during that time, but if the money had some investment premium, it would be sufficient to cover some major medical by now. Won't give me a 1M cap or anything....

One of the issues of course with the whole healthcare and making it a "free" "right" is the classic left vs right argument over individual "responsibility" vs what you got handed in life. There clearly are very significant personal behavior choices which accumulated over your life have a dramatic impact on how much healthcare $ you consume. The flip side is that there are also plenty of things that your genes give you (or random happenstance) which can also result in large $ use. Should we just socialize it all, and be done with it? I don't know...
