But they need to treat themselves like professionals before other people will see them that way. It is my view (and perhaps mine only) that professionals don't unionize.
Many people see professional organizations like the AMA as self-serving, and they are -- just as are unions. However, these organizations do, at the same time, serve the public good and when the chips are down, historically, they have recognized that by serving the public good they serve themselves. While we've seen them sell out (the AICPA, in which I'm a member, embarrassed itself after the Enron scandal, imo), they continue to set and administer some reasonable professional standards.
There is none of that with unions. Unions are 100% self-serving, even though their interests may be contrary to the public good. |
