Likewise, I have a Dell desktop with 2 hd's running for 5 years continuously that rarely gets turned off except when I am out of town I shut down everything. I agree externals would have a heat buildup with no fans. Externals are so inexpensive that I don't mind burning through one every 3 or 4 years. I have a 10+ years old Maxtor external with some old business data backups that I crank up once in awhile just to see if it still works. Like many things in technology it's the luck of the draw not to get a lemon with even the best performing brands. It may be impacted by the country of origin as various vendors seem to source in many different country's, but that wouldn't enter into my criterion when shopping. Who would have anticipated S Korea would become a world tech leader.
