I don't know what emergency rooms you've been to where welfare moms are there with kids who have a cold. I taught poor students, and their parents never took them to the doctor. One of them had had their foot run over, by the family car, and the parents just let it heal. Badly, as it turned out. Another girl said her sister had been poked in the eye and it kind of changed color, but after a while it was ok... yikes

I could go on and on with these stories. I suspect your ideas wrt welfare moms is pure crap. But if you can find some statistic on these visits, I'd be happy to look at them. My experience being in emergency rooms, and my experience with my students, does not support your hypothesis at all. On top of this, your idea about self diagnosing only works with literate people who can sort good information from bad on the web. I'd rather the system shelled out a few bucks and took a look at someone injured the way your were, as most people do not have the ability to diagnose and treat themselves using the web. You really shouldn't want those welfare moms, who are probably uneducated, and who no doubt have low reading levels, diagnosing their own kids- because it's so difficult to do anything about injuries and illnesses left untreated. What is happening right now is that many of our nations children are NOT getting the treatment they need, and so, often, relatively small injuries become intractable, or much more expensive, due to neglect.
