Black Youth Project: George Zimmerman 'Consumed by White Supremacy' ................................................................................................. Sunshine State News ^ | August 13, 2013 | Allison Nielsen
BYP 100, a young black activist group convened by the Black Youth Project to "mobilize communities of color beyond electoral politics" has created a "Justice for Trayvon Toolkit" booklet that covers a wide range of issues from white supremacy, the Marissa Alexander case and "stop and frisk" laws in new York.
The first page shows a graphic of a smiling Trayvon Martin, while the second page shows a raised fist holding a package of Skittles.
The toolkit includes readings on race, gender and justice as well as action steps for readers. A good chunk of the pamphlet is fixated on white supremacy and what BYP calls "internalized racism" between Zimmerman and Martin.
One of the descriptions of readings on witness Rachel Jeantel reads: "exploration into white supremacy and the white gaze that end up killing Trayvon ... much the same as the one that devalues Rachel Jeantel."
The toolkit explores what BYP calls "white supremacy" in virtually every aspect of the George Zimmerman trial, and deems Zimmerman "consumed by white supremacy."
"George Zimmerman is ethnically latino -- however, he has the same racial privilege as [a] white person, living in a gated community," reads the toolkit. "He has a light skin color, and he holds no Spanish name. So Zimmerman is so whitewashed, and consumed by white supremacy that is why he is white."
The toolkit includes action steps for youth organization in the community, urging readers to take the toolkit and use it for their own movements.
The pamphlet has already gathered the attention of the Dream Defenders, who have been camped out in front of Gov. Rick Scott's office for 29 days. The Dream Defenders posted a download link for the booklet on their Twitter page, which boasts over 12,000 followers. |
