No, it doesn't. The external Zip is either Parallel or SCSI. If parallel it would require quite a bit more work on the BIOS to make it bootable, and it may never happen. If SCSI, it won't work as a bootable device on most systems, because most SCSI BIOS only support Device ID 0 for booting, and current SCSI Zips can only be set as ID 5 or 6.

This BIOS support from AMI or Phoenix will only allow the use of an internal IDE Zip, or other IDE removable, for booting.

As for upgrading a BIOS, not all machines have flash BIOS which is upgradable with software. Many use PROM or EEPROM BIOS chips, which means you have to buy a new chip and replace your current BIOS chip with it. (Unless you happen to have access an EEPROM burner.)
