There IS a good reason for people to defend coal and that's JOBS.

It provides a lot of jobs to people that wouldn't be able to transition to something else very easily.

But, even the Chinese are trying to move away from coal because it's a DIRTY fuel and cleaning it is prohibitively expensive. (Before you tell me how many new coal plants the Chinese are building, let me tell you that the Chinese have some of the largest shale gas deposits in the world and they will be moving quickly to utilize them so they can move AWAY from coal in the next 10 years.)
