Coal's not going to be banned tomorrow or anytime soon.

You are right, not banned, but taxed, fined and regulated into oblivion. It's happening now.

But, it IS a dirty fuel and it would be better to move to cleaner fuels.

It's far cleaner than most understand. The images that you have seen of dirty smoke coming from the stacks is a myth. Especially with the modern day scrubbers that remove most of the particle pollution. If coal is going to be burned, it should be burned where it will provide the least amount of pollution...and that is the U.S. I've got no problem with other energy sources. I love them all....as long as they are economically viable without government subsidy. Love electric cars too....but they won't be so economical when the price of electricity skyrockets as a necessary part of eliminating coal as an energy source. So that means fewer electric cars in the future and the continued reliance on oil provided to us by countries that are hostile toward us.

As far as cost, the new techniques in recovering natural gas will soon price coal out of the market.

We will need every energy source available to us going into the future. Ever increasing population coupled with increased individual energy consumption will drive energy demand up. We need the natgas AND we need the coal.
