S&P earnings trend since 1950:

1. We are today further above trendline than in 2000, or at any other point except the 2007 peak.
2. Earnings are falling about half the time, and can continue falling for years, even though the LT trend is rising.
3. volatility has been increasing for the entire time period; peaks and troughs tend to be further above and below trendline than the last.
