My suspicion is that to really make the use of this fuel cell cost competitive with grid electricity for most users, the heat thrown off by the fuel cell needs to be recovered and used. Such a cogeneration setup is required presently for diesel generation to be cost competitive for hospitals and other large facilities.

This is just a guess since the information on the cube needed to make an informed analysis hasn't been released yet.

The larger issue is how the grid is going to be paid for as more and more individual users start to generate their own power at least some of the time. This issue has come up in Vermont already.

Fuel cells in cars will have a huge impact. Cars use about 20% of the energy in fuel for motion. The rest is wasted as heat. Electric motors are 85 to 95% efficient in converting electrical energy into motion. Imagine the fuel consumption of the auto/truck fleet dropping by 2/3.
