I think a lot of folks credit Ken Kesey with starting the "hippie" Movement. He and the merry pranksters had association with the Grateful Dead / Hells Angels. Manson certainly preyed on "hippies" and lived the lifestyle. Then we have the violent factions that sprang up - SDS, Weatherman, Black Panthers. Most of the hippies that I knew were spoiled rich kids that wanted to get high and laid... yeah they had it rough.
