Those "welfare" countries have different histories and values than America. A countries government reflects it's history and values. China for instance--a history of an Emperor for four thousand years. Still has an Emperor--called the Communist Party now, but the system isn't changed all that much. Orders still issued from a Cental Command post.

A lot of these welfare countries are in existence and not speaking Russian or German or Japanese because of us by the way. The countries in the cartoon can afford welfare states because they didn't have to spend the money on defense that we did as we protected them after WWII.

We were able to expand the welfare state after WWII because we were the only decent economy left standing and making money hand over fist so we could afford it back then. Now we can't afford it as much, and we have to have to compete with the rest of the world who has learned to make the stuff we used to at a cheaper price (Mexico, China). So changes are coming both here and in Europe in the form of a restructuring of the welfare state. Greece is the tip of the iceberg in this. Spain and Portugal are probably next. In fact the European Union probably could go down the tubes in this restructuring as those hard working Germans are getting tired of propping it up and paying for it (thru loans).
