John,
From what I've read max throughput that can be achieved with USB is 100Mb. That is max in theory. It also allows for up to 128 devices connected in the chain. For the firewire numbers are 400Mb and 64 devices.
Firewire was developed by APPLE and USB later was developed by INTEL. This is the reason why every motherboard manufactured now has at least one USB port. This might be the only reason why USB still gets mentioned from time to time. I read that Intel is contemplating with Firewire. Coming multimedia was mentioned as the reason for that.
I bought my last computer last January. It already had an USB port and I'm still looking for a HD with USB to use it for a backup.
All information is from the top of my head. Just like you I hope "one of the tech experts on the thread could comment more about both".
