Social science is about exploring values and what to do about them.
There isn't "social science"), there are social sciences, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, maybe others.
Part of what they do is examine values, but as sciences they don't promote values, they deal with facts.
People working in these sciences promote values that are informed by their scientific study, but doing so isn't doing science.
Civilization is defined by compassion and kindness
I think that's a poor definition, primitive people without what we would recognize as a civilization, had compassion and kindness. Even animals can show that. OTOH advanced civilizations can be brutal and horrible. Civilization is about order, and complexity more than its about compassion and kindness.
More to the point, wrong or right, your opinion here has nothing to do with science. Mine isn't really scientific either, although it might be closer (its examining history, rather than making a value judgement).
Don't get me wrong, values (including compassion and kindness) are very important. I'm not putting them down by saying they are not science, I'm just pointing out that they aren't. |
